The non-refundable rate — save by committing
Some listings let you choose between the standard price and a non-refundable rate — a cheaper option (the discount is set by the host, typically 10–20%) where no refund is given if you cancel.
You enable it with the "Non-refundable rate" checkbox on the listing page before booking; the price recalculates immediately. The choice is permanently attached to the reservation and shown on the receipt.
The non-refundable rate pays off when you are 100% sure about the trip. If there is any chance your plans change, pick the standard price with the listing's cancellation policy.
